The Dorothea Tanning Foundation
Established in 1997, The Dorothea Tanning Foundation is dedicated to preserving the artist’s legacy and fostering a broader public understanding of and education about the artist's art, writing, and poetry. The Foundation maintains an archive that provides access to the works of Dorothea Tanning through documentation, presentation, and interpretation. Current projects include the compilation of a catalogue raisonné that fully documents works by the artist; facilitating museum exhibitions through loans and research assistance; and developing and disseminating educational information and scholarly resources through this educational website devoted to the artist’s work. Located in New York City, the Foundation is open to researchers and scholars by appointment.
The Dorothea Tanning works in tandem with its sister organizaiton, The Destina Foundation.
The Destina Foundation
Based in New York, The Destina Foundation was established in 2015 to distribute the art and assets of Dorothea Tanning’s Estate for philanthropic purposes. Through both direct program activities and grants, the Foundation aims to encourage public knowledge and appreciation of the visual, performing and literary arts, and to support creative expression, reproductive freedom, environmental stewardship, and humanitarian efforts, which were so important to its benefactor. The Foundation also works in partnership with The Dorothea Tanning Foundation to manage the artist’s archive and educate the public about her enduring cultural contributions.
The Destina Foundation is proud to have endowed the Dorothea Tanning Award through the Foundation for Contemporary Artsas as part of its Grants to Artists Program. Inaugurated in 2017, this annual award provides an unrestricted grant of $40,000 to an artist whose work shares the spirit of independence and imagination that characterizes Dorothea Tanning's own career.
