Orphans was made for the catalogue of an exhibition in Cologne (Galerie der Spiegel, 1963) and so titled because in the catalogue I had a poem called “Orphanotropium.” It appeared in German translation. The deeply acid-bitten lines seemed to speak of the state of being an orphan. And their entanglement was perhaps the asylum.
